On Being Trans In A Brazilian Favela
In a special video series amplifying the voices of LGBTQIA+ creators, British Vogue is running six films made by individuals and groups from across the LGBTQIA+ spectrum.
In the first instalment of the series, Florian Joahn spotlights Brazil’s travesti, giving voice to a creative community in Brasilândia, a favela in São Paolo that is one of the most dangerous places to exist as a trans person today. The video captures the pride, vulnerability and power of Brazil’s transgender community, against the backdrop of a country that can be beautiful and brutal in equal measure.
The film is complemented by a photo series by JeanPaul Paula and an email exchange between British Vogue and Iara and Fabiola, who both appear in the film, and who live in the Brasilândia favela.
