Exhibition: Afropean, Travels In Black Europe
Galerie Mercatorplein is a recurring photo exhibition in public space for and together with the neighborhood. This edition features Afropean Express: Travels in Black Europe, a project by writer and photographer Johny Pitts.
Foam has been collaborating with the Amsterdam New-West district for years and shows exhibitions in a public space on Mercatorplein. With this project Foam would like to contribute to the goal of the Amsterdam-West district to give shape to this area and give the audience a chance to be more in contact with photography.
For this edition of Galerie Mercatorplein, Foam worked together with the New Amsterdam Academy. This platform wants to make young people more aware of their personal development, their environment and the active role they can play in this. A selection from the work of Johny Pitts is now on view in the space.
Pitts explores the life of the black community while traveling through Europe. He went in search of the ‘Afropean’ identity and captures his impressions of the cities he visited in still life atmospheric black and white photographs.
A selection of photos appeared in Pitts’ Jhalak-awarded book ‘Afropean: Notes From Black Europe’. Johny Pitts is also founder of the online platform Afropean. Click here to Get Familiar with the photographer/author.
Visit this exhibition until the 11th of November.
